Wax Melts
Milkhouse Candle Company review
An Iowa maker that publishes the one thing you cannot check before buying - what the fragrance is actually built from - and still will not tell you how long it lasts.

Disclosure — we earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which products we pick or what we say about them. We accept no samples and no sponsorship. How this site is funded.
The short answer
Milkhouse is the only wax melt brand we index that publishes a full top, heart and base note breakdown for every scent, alongside a plain composition statement: 100% all-natural soy, no paraffins, phthalates or additives, hand-poured in Iowa. That is the most useful disclosure in this category, because fragrance is the one thing you cannot check before you buy. Two honest marks against it: it publishes no hours figure at all, and at about 0.9 oz a cube it is too big for a plug-in dish without breaking it in half. Best for someone choosing a scent carefully; not for someone comparing value.
Quick picks

What Milkhouse publishes that almost nobody does
Most melt listings give you a scent name and an adjective. Milkhouse gives you the structure of the fragrance, in the format a perfumer would use, on every single product:
| Scent | Top | Heart | Base |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oatmeal, Milk & Honey | Almond milk, cherry | Oatmeal, anise | Honey, sugar cane, tonka bean, vanilla bean |
| Tobacco & Honey | Citrus, fruit, honey | Tobacco, spice, floral | Amber, musk, tobacco, wood |
| Caramel Cold Brew | Cold brew coffee | Milk chocolate | Caramel, vanilla |
| Farmhouse Christmas | Crisp apple | Spicy cinnamon | Peppered clove |
This is worth more than it looks. "Vanilla" covers at least four different fragrances, as the vanilla page sets out, and almost every disappointing melt purchase is a scent family mismatch rather than a quality problem. A note list tells you in advance whether the coffee scent you are buying is an espresso or a dessert.
The composition statement is equally plain: 100% all-natural soy wax, with no paraffins, phthalates or additives, hand-poured in the USA by a company that has been doing it since 2002. That puts it in the top three on non-toxic wax melts, where we rank on what makers are willing to put in writing rather than on the claim itself.
A correction we owe you
Until this review, this site described Milkhouse melts as "soy blended with beeswax". That was wrong, and it appeared in about a dozen places.
Re-reading the sources for this page: the maker's own melt page says "Made with 100% all-natural soy wax" and does not mention beeswax anywhere, and the Amazon listing says "pure soy wax cubes". The beeswax belongs to Milkhouse's candles, whose product pages do state beeswax and soy. Somewhere in our original read, the candle composition was attached to the melts.
We have corrected every instance. It mattered beyond tidiness, because a beeswax blend has a higher melt point than straight soy, and we had been telling readers these melts wanted a hotter warmer than they actually do. They are soy: they melt at soy temperatures and work fine on a gentle bulb warmer. The brand that genuinely builds melts on beeswax is Fontana Candle Co., and that page is where the high-melt-point advice now lives.
We publish corrections rather than editing silently, because a site that ranks brands on disclosure cannot quietly fix its own. The method behind that is on our methodology.
The 0.9 oz cube, and the dish it does not fit
A Milkhouse pack is 5.5 oz in six breakaway cubes, which is about 0.92 oz a cube - more than double a Yankee cube and more than seven times a Happy Wax shape. It is the largest cube in this registry.
That cuts both ways, and the honest version is that it mostly cuts against you.
- It is excellent value per ounce. Six cubes at 0.92 oz is a lot of wax for a mid-market price, and the per-ounce arithmetic beats most premium packs.
- It will overflow a plug-in dish. Plug-in warmers have the smallest dishes in the category. Break the cube in half, or buy a brand with smaller pieces - the plug-in page explains the dish constraint.
- It over-doses a small room. If you have ever found a scent overwhelming in a bedroom, a 0.92 oz dose is a likely reason. One Milkhouse cube is roughly seven Happy Wax shapes.
- Breakaway means you control it. The cubes snap apart, and nothing stops you using a half. The format gives you the option; the default dose does not.
Where its own instructions disagree
One inconsistency, reported because this is otherwise a careful brand. On the same maker product page:
- the description says to "break off one or two cubes" and place them in your warmer;
- the Directions section says to place "one wax cube in a clean warmer bowl".
At 0.92 oz a cube that is a difference between a normal dose and nearly two ounces of wax in a dish. The rule we apply whenever a maker's own figures disagree is to plan on the smaller one - and here the Directions are also the more sensible instruction, since two cubes is a dose for a large open-plan room rather than a default. Dose by dish size is on how many cubes per warmer.
The same page carries a warning worth repeating, because it is the one genuine hazard in using a melt warmer: "Never add water to wax; it can cause hot wax to splatter." Water in the dish belongs to oil burners, not wax warmers - wax melts vs oil burners covers why the two get confused.
Sixty scents, and how to get through them
The maker's melt collection runs to about sixty fragrances across two lines - Creamery, which is the sweet and creamy end, and Farmhouse, which is the fresh and woody end - all in the same 5.5 oz format. Amazon carries a rotating subset.
The brand publishes a scent family per product (earthy, floral, fresh, fruity, gourmand, masculine, woody), and combined with the note pyramid that makes this the easiest range on the site to shop deliberately. Our advice, in order:
- Pick the family first, not the name. The names are evocative and tell you nothing; the family and the base notes tell you what the room will smell like in hour three.
- Read the base notes. Base notes are what survives a warmer, as hot throw vs cold throw explains. A list topped with citrus and based on amber will read as amber.
- Buy one pack, not three. 5.5 oz is a lot of sessions. Six cubes at a cube a session is six evenings minimum, usually far more.
What it does not publish, and why that caps it
No hours. Not on the listings, not on the maker's pages, not in a FAQ. The only guidance is "replace when fragrance fades", which is honest but unusable.
That absence is why Milkhouse is not our longest-lasting pick despite having the most wax per pack, and why it cannot be entered into the cost-per-hour calculation on what an hour of fragrance costs. Happy Wax and Fontana publish hours; Milkhouse does not; and the gap between "most wax" and "longest lasting" is exactly the gap a published figure would close.
It is the one thing we would ask this brand to add. Everything else it discloses is more than its competitors manage.
Who should buy it, and who should not
Buy it if you choose fragrance carefully. A published note pyramid, a named scent family and a plain soy composition make this the range least likely to disappoint you on arrival, and the per-ounce price is reasonable for what it is. It is also the right brand if you want a masculine or gourmand scent described in notes rather than sold as a perfume interpretation.
Skip it if you run a plug-in warmer and would rather not break cubes, if you are comparing products on cost per hour, or if you want the volume of a 10 oz supermarket pack - the budget picks and the ScentSationals review are the honest counterparts there.
The whole field on the same criteria is on the best wax melts, and the brand-by-brand disclosure comparison is on the best wax melt brands.

Most wax per pack

Milkhouse Candle Company Soy Wax Melts, Oatmeal, Milk & Honey
The heaviest pack here by some distance, 5.5 oz in six cubes against 2.6 oz in six from Yankee, which changes the price-per-ounce arithmetic completely.
Best place to start: the brand's signature scent, and the listing that carries the composition statement and the note pyramid in one place.
- 0.9 oz a cube against Yankee's 0.43 oz. You are not comparing like with like when you compare six-cube packs across brands, and this pair proves it.
- 100% soy, stated free of paraffins, phthalates and additives, with a full top-heart-base note breakdown published per scent. Shortie's and Happy Wax disclose as much about the wax; nobody discloses as much about the fragrance.
- Milkhouse does not publish an hours figure. On a pack this size that is a genuine omission, and it is why this is not our longest-lasting pick despite having the most wax.

Your warmer has a small dish. A 5.5 oz six-cube bar is roughly 0.9 oz a cube, and that will overflow a plug-in.

Best published note breakdown

Milkhouse Candle Company Soy Wax Melts, Tobacco & Honey
The most complete scent disclosure of any melt we index, in the one fragrance family mass-market brands treat as a novelty.
Best for anyone who wants a masculine or cologne-adjacent room without buying a fragrance interpretation - the notes are named instead of a perfume.
- The listing publishes the whole pyramid: top citrus, fruit and honey; heart tobacco, spice and floral; base amber, musk, tobacco and wood. Nobody else at this price does that.
- This is the honest alternative to a cologne-inspired melt: it names the notes a masculine fragrance is actually built from instead of naming a perfume it is not.
- Still no hours figure, which is the brand's one consistent omission across every scent.
Skip this if
You want something bright or clean. Tobacco, amber and musk is a heavy, dry fragrance and it reads as a room that somebody smokes in to people who dislike it.

Best coffee scent with notes published

Milkhouse Candle Company Soy Wax Melts, Caramel Cold Brew
The brand's coffee scent, and the clearest demonstration that a published note list beats a scent name you have to guess at.
Best coffee scent on the site, and the clearest demonstration of why a published note list beats a scent name.
- Published notes are cold brew coffee, milk chocolate, caramel and vanilla, so you know before buying whether this is the coffee you meant.
- Same 5.5 oz, six-cube format as the rest of the range, which is roughly 0.9 oz a cube - too much for a small plug-in dish without breaking a cube in half.
- Marked a best seller on the maker's own collection page, which is a popularity signal rather than a quality measurement.
Skip this if
You want coffee without sweetness. Milk chocolate, caramel and vanilla sit on top of the coffee here, which is a dessert rather than an espresso.

Best fall scent from a named maker

Milkhouse Brown Butter Pumpkin Soy Wax Melts
The same 5.5 oz pure-soy format as our year-round Milkhouse pick, in the one scent family this season is actually about.
Best fall scent from a named maker. Same format, the one season this scent family is actually about.
- 5.5 oz is roughly double what a supermarket six-cube pack contains, which is what makes the per-ounce price competitive despite the higher shelf price.
- Milkhouse publishes a 100% soy composition and a full note breakdown for its melts, which almost no seasonal pack does.
- Seasonal scents are produced in runs. If you like it, the honest advice is to buy it when you see it rather than in January.
Skip this if
You do not like bakery-adjacent scents. Brown butter and pumpkin is firmly in that family and no amount of dosing changes its character.

Best published scent notes

Milkhouse Farmhouse Christmas Soy Wax Melts
The only holiday pack here that publishes its scent notes in full, from the maker with the most wax per pack in our year-round ranking.
Best for the holidays if you want the notes spelled out - crisp apple, spicy cinnamon and peppered clove rather than the word "festive".
- Published notes: top apple, clove and ginger; middle tea and cinnamon; base cardamom. Nobody else in this roundup publishes a note pyramid at all.
- 5.5 oz is the same weight as the year-round Milkhouse pack, so the holiday label costs you nothing in wax.
- No hours figure, which is the standing Milkhouse omission rather than a seasonal one.
Skip this if
You want pine or cookie. Despite the name this is a spiced apple and cinnamon profile, and the listing publishes no hours figure.

Questions people actually ask
Are Milkhouse wax melts soy or beeswax?
The melts are 100% all-natural soy. The maker's melt pages state it plainly and never mention beeswax, and the Amazon listings say pure soy wax cubes. The beeswax belongs to Milkhouse's candles, whose product pages do state beeswax and soy. This site previously had that the wrong way round for the melts and has corrected it.
Are Milkhouse candles and wax melts toxic?
Nothing published suggests so, and the brand discloses more than most: 100% all-natural soy for the melts, with paraffins, phthalates and additives stated as excluded, hand-poured in the USA. What it does not publish is the fragrance composition, which is the norm in this category rather than the exception - no melt maker we index publishes a full fragrance breakdown. Our page on whether wax melts release toxins sets out what is and is not known.
Where are Milkhouse candles made?
Hand-poured in the USA, by a company based in Iowa that has been operating since 2002. The maker states hand-poured in the USA on its product pages and the Amazon listings repeat it. Note that where a product is poured is not the same as where the wax or fragrance ingredients are sourced, and no maker in this category publishes the latter.
How long do Milkhouse wax melts last?
The brand publishes no hours figure, which is its one real omission. What is published is 5.5 oz across six breakaway cubes - about 0.92 oz a cube, the largest in our registry - and a direction to use one cube at a time. At one cube a session that is at least six sessions a pack and usually a good deal more.
How many Milkhouse cubes should I use?
One. The maker's Directions say one cube in a clean warmer bowl, even though its own product description elsewhere says one or two. At 0.92 oz, one cube is already a full dose for a normal room, and two is a dose for a large open-plan space. On a plug-in with a small dish, break the cube in half.
Which Milkhouse scent should I start with?
Pick by family and base notes rather than by name. Oatmeal, Milk & Honey is the brand's signature and sits in the sweet, creamy Creamery line; Tobacco & Honey is the best choice if you want something dry and masculine; Caramel Cold Brew is the coffee scent with the sweetness declared up front. Every listing publishes its notes, so you can check before buying rather than after.
