Wax Melts
Fontana Candle Co. review
The most transparent melt brand we index, and the most expensive hour of fragrance on the site. Both of those come from the same decision.

The short answer
Fontana is the only brand we index that publishes both a real ingredient list and an hours figure: beeswax, coconut oil and essential oils, three pucks of about 1.3 oz a jar, 20 to 25 hours a jar, MADE SAFE certified and made in the USA. It is also the most expensive scent per hour on this site by a wide margin, and its own product page tells you not to expect it to fill a room. Buy it if a quiet, essential-oil-only scent in the room you are sitting in is the point - which is a real buyer, and one almost nothing else in this category serves honestly.

What Fontana publishes
Everything on this site is ranked on what makers write down. Fontana writes down more than anyone else in the registry, and it is the only brand that publishes both halves of the value calculation.
| What a buyer needs | Fontana | Typical for this category |
|---|---|---|
| Wax | Beeswax and coconut oil | Not published |
| Fragrance source | Essential oils, stated no synthetic fragrance | Not published |
| Pack format | 3 pucks a jar, about 1.3 oz each | Weight only, if that |
| Hours | About 20 to 25 per jar | Not published |
| Dose | One puck in the warmer tray | Not published |
| Certification | MADE SAFE certified, stated third-party tested | None |
| Made in | Handcrafted in the US | Sometimes |
| Honest limitation | Stated: the scent is light | Never |
The last row is the unusual one, and it is the reason this review exists.
The maker contradicts its own listing, in your favor
The Amazon listing bullet says "LONG-LASTING SCENT FOR EVERY SEASON" and promises to fill your room with a consistent, balanced aroma. The maker's own product page says this:
"Essential oil melts have a very light scent when melted and cannot be compared with a traditional fragrance wax melt." And, plainly: "Please do not expect it to fill a room with scent."
We have never seen another fragrance maker publish that. It is a company talking itself out of a sale to avoid a disappointed customer, and when a maker's own pages disagree, the rule on this site is to plan on the more conservative figure. So: plan on a quiet scent that reaches the chair you are sitting in, not a scent that greets you at the front door.
The product title on Amazon is honest in the same direction - "gentle scent for sensitive users" - and that is the buyer this brand actually fits. We have built a page for exactly that household, and this is its first pick.
Why essential-oil melts are quieter, and it is not a flaw
The mechanism is worth understanding before deciding the brand is poor value, because it is a trade rather than a failure.
A conventional melt carries a synthetic fragrance oil engineered for exactly this job: a high load, stable when heated for hours, with a long tail. Essential oils are volatile plant distillates - they evaporate faster, they vary batch to batch, and they cannot be loaded as heavily without the composition breaking down. That is the same reason an oil in a diffuser disappears in an hour while a melt keeps going, which we work through on wax melts vs essential oils.
So the quieter scent is not Fontana cutting corners. It is what happens when you refuse synthetic fragrance oil, and the company publishing that trade instead of hiding it is the single most trustworthy thing about it. The three tiers of essential-oil claim across this category - named, infused, and merely mentioned - are set out on essential oil wax melts, where Fontana sits in the top tier.
The arithmetic, and it is brutal
Because Fontana publishes hours, it can be put into the calculation that decides value in this category. Only two brands here can.
| Pack | Published hours | If it cost | Per hour |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fontana jar, 3 pucks | About 20 to 25 h | $15.00 | About $0.65 |
| Happy Wax 2 oz pouch | About 60 h | $8.00 | About $0.13 |
| Happy Wax 8 oz pouch | About 240 h | $24.00 | About $0.10 |
| Yankee 6 cubes, 2.6 oz | Up to 48 h | $6.00 | About $0.13 |
| Milkhouse 5.5 oz | Not published | $10.00 | Cannot be computed |
| ScentSationals 10 oz | Not published | $15.00 | Cannot be computed |
On those illustrative figures Fontana costs roughly five times as much per hour as the premium soy brand and more than six times a large pouch. There is no reading of the arithmetic that makes it cheap.
Assumption, not a fact
The prices in column three are placeholders to show the method, not observed prices, and the hours are the makers' own claims rather than anything we measured. The method is the deliverable; substitute what you are actually charged. Full working on what an hour of fragrance costs.
What you are buying for that premium is a published ingredient list, a third-party certification, essential oils instead of fragrance oil, and a reusable glass jar. Whether that is worth five times the hourly cost is a judgment about priorities, not about arithmetic - but you should make it knowing the number.
Beeswax needs a warmer that gets hot
This is the practical part most reviews miss. Beeswax has a higher melt point than soy, so a Fontana puck wants more heat than a soy cube to reach a proper liquid pool - and a shallow pool is the most common reason a melt seems to have no scent, which we cover on why you cannot smell your wax melts.
Practically, that means:
- A hot plate warmer or a decent dish warmer suits it. Our pick above pairs a hot plate with a timer, which is the combination this wax wants.
- A low-wattage bulb warmer may underperform. If the puck is still partly solid after half an hour, the warmer is the problem, not the wax. Wattages and bulb fittings are on the bulb guide.
- One puck is a full dose. The maker's instruction is one puck in the tray - at 1.3 oz it is larger than most cubes, so there is no reason to double up.
- The jar is three sessions, not three cubes. Three pucks, 20 to 25 hours total, works out at roughly seven to eight hours a puck - one long evening each.
MADE SAFE, and what a certification actually settles
Fontana states that its melts are MADE SAFE certified and third-party tested for purity. It is the only certification of its kind on any melt in this registry, and it does mean something: a third party has reviewed the ingredients against a published screening list, which is more than a self-declared "non-toxic" claim.
What it does not settle is what reaches the air in your room. No certification scheme measures the volatile organic compounds a warmed melt releases in a small bedroom over four hours, because nobody publishes that for any product in this category. Our page on whether wax melts release toxins sets out what is and is not known, and non-toxic wax melts explains what the FTC actually requires behind that phrase.
Treat the certification as what it is: strong evidence about the ingredients, and no evidence at all about exposure.
The cat question comes before the scent question
Essential oils are the one part of this category with documented veterinary guidance against it, and that guidance applies to Fontana specifically because essential oil is the whole fragrance.
Pet Poison Helpline names specific essential oils as toxic to cats and explains the liver-enzyme reason, and VCA Animal Hospitals adds that cats are "particularly sensitive" to the phenolic compounds in them. Cinnamon and citrus oils, which are in the spice scent above, are both on the lists.
The honest position: if there is a cat in the house, this is the wrong brand for you, however good its disclosure is. Pick a fragrance-oil melt and keep the warmer out of reach instead - wax melts and cats has the detail, and pet-safe wax melts has the picks. For birds the answer is no regardless of brand, as that page explains.
Who should buy it, and who should not
Buy it if fragrance load is the problem rather than the point: a household where someone gets headaches from scented products, a nursery-adjacent room, a small flat where a normal melt is overwhelming, or anyone who wants essential oils with no synthetic fragrance and is prepared to pay for it. The published ingredients and the published hours make it the only brand here you can fully evaluate before buying.
Skip it if you want to scent an open-plan space, if you are comparing on cost per hour, or if there is a cat in the house. For throw, the strongest wax melts is the opposite end of the same spectrum; for value, the budget picks.
The whole field on the same criteria is on the best wax melts.

Best essential-oil disclosure

Fontana Candle Co. Non-Toxic Wax Melts, Lavender, 3-Pack
The one pack here that says what the fragrance actually is - essential oils, not fragrance oil - and points at a certification you can go and read.
Best place to start, and the pick we already rank for essential-oil disclosure: lavender is the scent family this composition suits best.
- Beeswax and coconut oil rather than soy, with essential oils rather than fragrance oil. That combination is rare enough that it is most of the reason to buy it.
- The listing cites third-party purity testing and MADE SAFE certification. We have not seen either file; what matters is that it names something checkable rather than saying "clean".
- Reusable glass jars and pucks rather than a clamshell of cubes. Check the puck against your dish before you buy - it is a different shape from a standard cube.
Skip this if
You want a strong room-filling throw. Essential oils are more volatile and generally quieter than fragrance oils, and 20-25 hours a jar is modest.

Fontana Beeswax Melts
Best for a fragrance-sensitive household

Fontana Candle Co. Non-Toxic Wax Melts, Cinnamon Orange, 3-Pack
The spice scent from the only brand here that both publishes an hours figure and warns you the scent is light.
Best for a fragrance-sensitive household at Christmas - a spice scent that will not take over the room, from a listing that says so in its own title.
- The listing is titled "gentle scent for sensitive users", which is a rare thing to find on a fragrance product: a maker telling you the throw is small on purpose.
- Essential oils rather than fragrance oil, which puts it under the cat warning that applies to every essential-oil product - cinnamon and citrus oils are both named risks.
- One puck fills a standard dish on its own, so the three-puck jar is three full sessions rather than three cubes you combine.

Fontana Cinnamon Orange
Best essential-oil bakery scent

Fontana Candle Co. Non-Toxic Wax Melts, Spiced Latte, 3-Pack
The nearest this brand gets to a bakery scent, from a composition short enough to read on the jar.
Best essential-oil bakery scent, in the reusable glass jar that is the only melt packaging here worth keeping.
- Packed in a reusable glass jar rather than a clamshell, which is the only melt packaging we index that is worth keeping.
- MADE SAFE certified and stated third-party tested for purity - the only certification of its kind on any melt in this registry.
- The jar is the unit of value here. Three pucks and 20 to 25 hours is a fraction of what a 10 oz supermarket pack holds, and the price is higher.

You are replacing a supermarket vanilla. This is a quieter, drier scent and it will read as weak if that is your reference point.

Fontana Spiced Latte
Best for a strict housing rule

Colonial Candle Wax Melt Warmer with Timer, 3-in-1 Electric Wax Melter
A plate warmer with a published timer and a named third-party safety listing, which together answer the two things campus housing rules actually ask about.
Best hardware for these pucks: beeswax needs more heat than soy, and this warmer pairs a hot plate with a timer so a quiet scent is not left running all day.
- The listing states it is "Safety tested and ETL-certified through a nationally recognized OSHA lab". ETL is Intertek's mark and sits alongside UL as a recognized testing lab, which matters when a housing contract asks for a listed appliance.
- No wattage is published anywhere on the listing, so we cannot compute its running cost the way we do for the warmers that print a number. Not published is what we record.
- 2 / 4 / 8 hours is written down; end-of-timer behavior is not. If auto shut-off is the feature you need in writing, check before you buy or add an outlet timer.
- A 36-inch cord is short for a dorm desk. Measure to the nearest outlet - an extension lead is itself a prohibited item on several of the campuses we read.

Questions people actually ask
Are Fontana wax melts worth the price?
They are the most expensive scent per hour on this site - roughly five times a premium soy pouch on illustrative prices, using each maker's own published hours. What the premium buys is a real ingredient list (beeswax, coconut oil, essential oils), MADE SAFE certification, stated third-party testing and a reusable glass jar. If you need an essential-oil-only product or a deliberately quiet scent, nothing else here does the job. If you want hours of fragrance per dollar, it is poor value and the maker would probably agree.
How long does a Fontana wax melt last?
The maker publishes about 20 to 25 hours per jar, and a jar is three pucks of roughly 1.3 oz. That works out at roughly seven to eight hours a puck, which is one long evening each. It is one of only two published hours figures in our registry, and the only one that comes with a stated dose of one puck at a time.
Are Fontana wax melts strong?
No, and the maker says so: its own product page states that essential oil melts have a very light scent when melted, cannot be compared with a traditional fragrance wax melt, and should not be expected to fill a room. The Amazon listing bullet promises long-lasting room-filling fragrance, which contradicts it; we plan on the maker's more conservative version.
Are Fontana essential oil wax melts safe for cats?
We would not use them in a house with a cat. Essential oil is the entire fragrance here, and Pet Poison Helpline names specific essential oils as toxic to cats while VCA Animal Hospitals notes cats are particularly sensitive to the phenolic compounds in them. Cinnamon and citrus oils appear in this range and on those lists. A fragrance-oil melt with the warmer kept out of reach is the safer route in a cat household.
What does MADE SAFE certified mean on a wax melt?
It means a third party has screened the product's ingredients against a published list of substances it excludes. That is meaningfully stronger than a self-declared non-toxic claim, and Fontana is the only melt in our registry carrying it. It does not measure what reaches the air in your room when the wax is warmed - no scheme does, for any product in this category.
What wax are Fontana melts made from?
Beeswax and coconut oil, scented with essential oils, with the maker stating never paraffin and never synthetic fragrance. Beeswax has a higher melt point than soy, so these pucks want a warmer that gets properly hot - a hot plate warmer or a decent dish warmer rather than a low-wattage bulb.
