That combination makes cost per hour of fragrance computable rather than a guess. Yankee Candle is the pick if scent range matters more than a spec sheet.

How we picked
We have not burned any of these. No samples, no test units, no lab. What we did was read what each maker publishes, put the source and the date beside every figure, and rank on what a published specification can actually support.
That produces a different list from a site that says it tested twenty melts, and it produces one you can check. The criteria, weighted in this order:
- Does the maker publish an hours figure? Without one you cannot compare value across brands at all, only price per pack - and pack sizes here vary by more than a factor of two.
- Does the maker publish the wax type? It decides melt temperature, throw character and whether the product suits the buyer avoiding paraffin.
- Is the weight per cube stated or derivable? Six cubes tells you nothing. Ounces do.
- Does the fragrance do a specific job? Odor elimination is a different product from fragrance, and it belongs on the list for the people who need it.

Six cubes is not a unit of measurement
This is the most useful thing on the page, and it took compiling the specs to see it.
Four of our five picks come in six-cube packs. Those packs contain 2.3 oz, 2.6 oz, 2.75 oz and 5.5 oz of wax. The largest holds nearly two and a half times the wax of the smallest for the same headline cube count.

Two conclusions follow. Compare on ounces, never on cube count. And where a maker publishes neither hours nor wax type, the pack weight is the only real number you have.
The number nobody can compute
Three of these five publish no hours figure at all, and a fourth publishes one that does not come from the manufacturer.
Milkhouse has the most wax in the pack by a distance and publishes nothing about how long it lasts. Febreze - a Procter and Gamble product, a company with no shortage of technical documentation - publishes nothing either. Glade's widely repeated "12 hours per melt" appears on retail listings; we could not find it on Glade's own product pages, so we label it as a retail-listing figure rather than promoting it to a manufacturer spec.
That is not a small omission. Hours per pack is the denominator in every value comparison anyone would want to make. Its absence across most of the category is why this site exists, and it is the reason Happy Wax tops the list without our having smelled a single one.
One we do not recommend
Unbranded bulk melt lots sold by weight with no maker named. They are all over the marketplaces, they are extremely cheap per ounce, and they are the one thing on this page we would actively steer you away from.
The reason is not quality snobbery. It is that with no named maker there is no published wax composition, no fragrance information and nobody to ask. That is tolerable for a product you look at; it is a poor position for a product you aerosolize into a room you sleep in. It matters much more if you have a cat: both the Pet Poison Helpline and VCA name specific essential oils that are toxic to cats, and you cannot check a list of oils against a product that does not publish one.
If price is the constraint, Glade at fifth place is the honest answer - cheap, universally available, and made by a company you can contact.
What to look for
Ounces, not cubes
Covered above and worth repeating because every listing in this category leads with cube count. Divide the pack weight by the count before you compare anything.
A stated wax type if you care about paraffin
Only two of our five publish one. If avoiding paraffin is your reason for switching, a pack that does not say is not evidence either way. See soy vs paraffin.
Whether the fragrance is doing a job
Odor elimination and fragrance are different claims. If the problem is a litter tray or last night's cooking, a scent laid over it is not the same product as one formulated to neutralize it. See wax melts for pet odor.
Cube size against your dish
A 0.92 oz Milkhouse cube will overflow a plug-in dish that a 0.38 oz Glade cube fits twice over. Match the melt to the hardware, not the other way round. How many cubes to use.
Safety, before you buy a scent
If there is a cat in the house, choose the fragrance before you choose anything else. Cats have fewer of the liver enzymes needed to metabolize certain essential oils, which is why they are affected by things other animals tolerate. The Pet Poison Helpline names wintergreen, sweet birch, citrus, pine, ylang ylang, peppermint, cinnamon, pennyroyal, clove, eucalyptus and tea tree among the oils toxic to cats.

- The published numbers are internally consistent across all three sizes at about 30 hours of stated scent time per ounce of wax, which is the sort of consistency you want from a spec sheet.
- The dosing guidance is unusually specific: 1 to 2 shapes in an outlet or mini warmer, 2 to 3 in a standard one, 5 to 8 in the largest. Most brands say one or two cubes and stop.
- Soy melts at a lower temperature than paraffin, which means a gentler, longer throw rather than a hard opening burst. That is a real difference in character, not a marketing line.
Skip this if
You want a supermarket price. Soy melts from a named US maker cost more per ounce than a paraffin blend, and no amount of scent throw closes that gap.

- 0.9 oz a cube against Yankee's 0.43 oz. You are not comparing like with like when you compare six-cube packs across brands, and this pair proves it.
- Soy blended with beeswax rather than straight soy. Beeswax raises the melt point, so it wants a warmer that gets properly hot rather than a gentle bulb.
- Milkhouse does not publish an hours figure. On a pack this size that is a genuine omission, and it is why this is not our longest-lasting pick despite having the most wax.
Skip this if
Your warmer has a small dish. A 5.5 oz six-cube bar is roughly 0.9 oz a cube, and that will overflow a plug-in.

The only melt on this list built around neutralizing an odor rather than covering it, which is a different product doing a different job.
- Odor elimination and fragrance are not the same claim. Febreze markets these on the first; every other melt here is sold on the second.
- No published hours. That is a real gap for a product people buy repeatedly, and it means cost per hour cannot be computed for this one.
- If the odor source is a litter tray or a damp dog bed, the melt is the last step and not the first. Nothing warmed in a dish removes a source you have not dealt with.

You want to know how long a cube lasts. Procter and Gamble does not publish an hours figure for these, and wanting one does not produce it.

Last, and still worth buying if price is the constraint. It is the only pick where the headline durability number comes from retail listings rather than from the manufacturer, and we have said so rather than passing it off.
- Available in every supermarket in the country, which for a repeat-purchase consumable is worth more than a slightly better throw.
- The 12-hours-per-melt figure comes from retail listings, not from Glade. We have flagged that rather than repeating it as fact.
- 2.3 oz across six cubes is about 0.38 oz a cube, the smallest here. Compare on ounces, not on cube count.

What are the strongest wax melts?
Nobody can tell you honestly, because no maker publishes a fragrance load and no independent test of throw exists for this category. What you can control is dose and warmer: more wax at a higher pool temperature gives a stronger throw. Beyond that, treat any strength claim you read - including ours if we made one - as unverifiable.
How long do wax melts last?
Where makers publish a figure it ranges widely. Happy Wax publishes roughly 60 hours from a 2 oz pouch, 120 from 4 oz and 240 from 8 oz. Yankee publishes up to 8 hours per cube, and note that up to is a ceiling rather than an average. Milkhouse and Febreze publish nothing. Glade's 12-hours-per-melt figure comes from retail listings, not from Glade.
Are expensive wax melts worth it?
Sometimes, and you can check rather than guess. Divide price by published hours and compare. A more expensive pouch with a published 240 hours can work out cheaper per hour than a cheap six-cube pack with no hours figure at all. Where a brand publishes no hours, you are buying on price per ounce and hoping.
Do wax melts work as well as candles?
For fragrance, generally yes and often better, because a warmer heats the whole dish rather than just the pool around a wick, and no fragrance is lost to a flame. What you give up is the flame itself, which for most people on this site is the point. Full comparison on our wax melts vs candles page.
What wax melts are safe for cats?
We do not label any specific product as safe for cats, because that is a veterinary judgment we are not qualified to make. What is well documented is that cats have fewer of the liver enzymes needed to metabolize certain essential oils, and both the Pet Poison Helpline and VCA publish lists of the oils involved. Check the pack against those lists, keep the room ventilated, and ask your vet.
