They melt at different temperatures and throw differently, which is real and checkable. The health comparison is where the internet gets loudest and the evidence gets thinnest.

The short answer

Soy melts at a lower temperature than paraffin, which gives a gentler, slower throw and a longer tail; paraffin comes up faster and hits harder. Soy is generally more expensive per ounce and cleans up more easily. On health, the honest position is that a melt is not burned, so most of the soy-versus-paraffin argument - which is really about combustion in candles - does not transfer to this format at all.

The difference that is genuinely useful

Melt point, and it has a direct practical consequence for what warmer you should own.

Soy melts at a lower temperature, so on a given warmer it reaches a liquid pool sooner and then sits at a gentler working temperature. You get a softer opening and a longer, flatter release. That suits a bulb warmer, which radiates heat down and never gets the pool very hot.

Paraffin needs more heat to get going and, once there, releases faster. On a low-wattage bulb warmer a paraffin melt can genuinely underperform. On a 24 W plate warmer it comes into its own.

Blends complicate this usefully. Milkhouse blends beeswax into soy, and beeswax has a higher melt point than soy - so that product wants a warmer that gets hot, despite being a soy melt. Read the composition, not the category. Mechanism on how wax warmers work.

The health argument, honestly

This is where we are going to be less definite than most pages you will read on the subject, and the reason is that the evidence genuinely is less definite.

Almost all of the soy-versus-paraffin argument you will encounter is about candles. It concerns soot from incomplete combustion at the flame and what is produced when paraffin burns. Those are real questions about burning.

A wax melt is not burned. It is warmed to a temperature well below combustion. There is no flame, no wick and no soot from either wax. Transplanting the candle argument onto melts is a category error, and it is done constantly - usually by sites selling soy melts.

What is left when you set combustion aside is the fragrance, and here the honest answer is that we do not know as much as anyone would like. Warming any fragranced product releases volatile organic compounds into indoor air. That is true of soy and paraffin alike, because the fragrance oil is the same class of material in both. We have not found evidence that would let us say the wax base meaningfully changes it, and we are not going to assert one because it would suit a page.

Where we are uncertain, we say so. Long-term exposure to fragranced indoor air is an area where the research is thinner than the confidence of most writing about it. Ventilating the room is a sensible precaution regardless of which wax you buy. More on do wax melts release toxins.

When soy wins

  • You own a gentle bulb warmer. The lower melt point suits it; a paraffin melt on a low-wattage bulb can genuinely disappoint.
  • You want a long, even throw rather than a strong opening - a bedroom rather than an entryway.
  • You want to know what you are buying. This is the underrated one. Brands using soy publish it because it is a selling point; brands using paraffin mostly publish no wax type at all. Choosing soy is often, in practice, choosing a brand that documents its product.
  • You change scents often. Softer wax releases from a dish more easily.

When paraffin wins

  • Cost. It is materially cheaper per ounce and it is what the supermarket brands use. For a large room where dose matters more than sophistication, that is a real argument.
  • You want the room to smell of something immediately. A faster, stronger opening is what you want in an entry or a bathroom you are in for ten minutes.
  • You have a hot plate warmer. The higher melt point is not a drawback on hardware that gets there easily.
  • Scent range. The largest fragrance catalogs in this category are mostly brands that do not publish a wax type, which in practice means paraffin or a blend. If a specific fragrance is what you want, it may only exist in one wax.

Questions people actually ask

Are soy wax melts better than paraffin?

Better at different things. Soy melts at a lower temperature, so it suits gentle bulb warmers and gives a longer, flatter throw. Paraffin needs more heat and gives a faster, stronger opening, and it is cheaper. Neither is burned in a warmer, so the soot and combustion arguments that dominate the candle version of this debate do not apply here.

Do paraffin wax melts release toxins?

The honest answer is that a melt is not burned, so the combustion products people worry about with paraffin candles are not produced. What is released from any warmed fragranced wax is volatile organic compounds from the fragrance itself, and that is true of soy and paraffin alike. Which wax melt is easier to clean out of a warmer?

Soy, generally - it is softer and releases from a dish more easily. Paraffin sets harder and is more likely to need warming before it will lift. Either way, a removable silicone dish makes the question mostly irrelevant: cooled wax pops out in one piece regardless of type.
