What a wax warmer costs to run, with the arithmetic shown

Nobody ranking for these products publishes a cost. It needs a rated wattage and a calculator, not a lab, so here it is.

Phase-zero research for this site turned up 152 real search queries about the electricity, bulbs and wattage of wax warmers - and across nine competitor pages we fetched, the total number of published cost calculations was zero.

That is a strange gap, because the arithmetic is not difficult. It needs a rated wattage and a calculator, not a laboratory. So this hub does it: the formula, worked through slowly, with every assumption labeled as an assumption and every input substitutable for your own.

The headline finding is one that cuts against selling you anything. The electricity is not the expensive part. At 17 cents per kilowatt-hour and six hours a day, the entire annual running cost of the most power-hungry warmer we index is under ten dollars. The wax costs considerably more. If you want to spend less on this, buy differently rather than running differently.

The real consumable cost of a bulb warmer, and why sourcing rather than price is the thing to weigh before you buy one.

The formula, once

Everything on this site derives from one line: annual cost = (rated watts ÷ 1000) × hours per day × 365 × cost per kWh.

For a 25 W warmer at six hours a day and 17 cents per kilowatt-hour: 25 ÷ 1000 = 0.025 kW; × 6 = 0.15 kWh a day; × 365 = 54.75 kWh; × $0.17 = $9.31 a year. A 10 W plate warmer on the same basis is $3.72.

We publish the method rather than only the answer for a specific reason: US residential electricity rates vary by more than a factor of three between states, so our number is not your number. Put your own rate in the last step and your own hours in the second. The full table by wattage.

The number that actually decides value

Not electricity - cost per hour of fragrance. That is (pack price ÷ published hours) + (watts ÷ 1000 × your rate), and the second term is almost always negligible. A 10 W warmer adds about 0.17 cents an hour. Under two cents for a four-hour evening.

The wax is the whole cost, which makes the published hours figure the most important number in the category - and three of the five brands we index publish none. A fourth has one that appears on retail listings rather than on the maker's own pages.

So for most of this market the calculation cannot be performed at all, by us or by you. That is why we rank brands on documentation rather than on taste, and it is the single strongest argument for buying from a maker that tells you what you are getting. Worked in full.

Where wattage genuinely matters

Two places. The first is at the extremes of duty cycle: a 25 W plug-in left running continuously - which happens, because it is out of the way and easy to forget - is about $37 a year against $14.89 for a 10 W plate warmer doing the same job. That is a real difference for an identical outcome.

The second is indirect and larger. A hotter warmer drives fragrance out of the wax faster, so a high-wattage warmer costs you more in wax rather than in electricity. That is the real financial link between the hardware and the running cost, and it is the opposite of the intuition that a stronger warmer is better value.

Bulb warmers also pay twice, in a sense: the bulb is producing visible light as well as heat, so some of that wattage is doing a job other than melting wax. And the bulb is a consumable the electricity figure does not capture. What bulbs cost to own.

Our electricity assumption, stated plainly

Every cost figure on this site uses 17 cents per kilowatt-hour. That is an assumption, not a fact about your house, and it is labeled as one everywhere it appears. A round figure in the range US residential customers actually pay. Your own bill is the number that matters, and every formula on this site is written so you can substitute it.

Two things that catch people out when substituting their own. If you are on a time-of-use tariff, the rate depends on when the warmer runs - and evening is usually both the expensive window and when a warmer runs. And a standing daily charge is unaffected by the warmer, so leave it out.

We review this assumption annually, or sooner if it moves materially, and the date it was last checked is on every page that uses it. A number you cannot reproduce is not much use, which is the whole reason this hub exists.
