Cheapest per pack and cheapest per hour are different wax melts
Price per pack is the wrong number. Here is how to compare price per hour of fragrance, and why most bulk deals fail that test.

The short answer
Glade is the cheapest real option per pack and it is a reasonable buy. But cheapest per pack and cheapest per hour are often different products: an 8 oz Happy Wax pouch with a published 240 hours can beat several six-cube packs on price per hour. The one thing we would avoid is unbranded bulk wax with no maker and no published composition.

The only comparison worth making
Price divided by hours. That is it, and almost nobody does it because most brands do not publish the denominator.
Here is the method. Take the price you actually pay for a pack. Divide it by the published hours for that pack. That gives cost per hour of fragrance, and it is directly comparable across pack sizes, cube counts and brands in a way that price per pack is not.

Two honest observations about that table. Glade looks cheapest per hour, and its hours figure is the one that does not come from the manufacturer - so it is the least trustworthy number in the column. And Milkhouse cannot be entered at all, which is what publishing nothing costs a buyer.
Bigger is usually cheaper per hour, with one condition
Happy Wax's published figures scale linearly - 30 hours per ounce at 2 oz, 4 oz and 8 oz - so if the 8 oz pouch costs less than four times the 2 oz pouch, it wins on cost per hour. It usually does.
The condition is that you have to like it. A large pouch of a scent you do not enjoy is not cheap fragrance, it is expensive storage. This is the single most common way people lose money in this category, and the fix is buying the smallest size of anything new first.
There is a second condition people forget: fragrance evaporates slowly from solid wax at room temperature. A very large pack you will take two years to work through is losing scent the whole time unless it is sealed and cool. See storage and shelf life.
The hardware side of running cheap
Electricity is the small half, but it is not nothing and the spread is larger than people expect.
At 17 cents per kilowatt-hour and six hours a day, the 10 W plate warmer we index costs about $3.72 a year to run. A 25 W plug-in costs about $9.31. Left running continuously, that 25 W plug-in is about $37 a year - which is real money next to the wax it is melting.
Assumption, not a fact
17 cents per kilowatt-hour is an assumption. A round figure in the range US residential customers actually pay. Your own bill is the number that matters, and every formula on this site is written so you can substitute it. Six hours a day is also an assumption.
The cheapest way to run this hobby is a low-wattage plate warmer with no bulb to replace, on a timer, with wax bought in the largest size of a scent you have already tested. Working on the cheapest way to scent a room.
What we do not recommend
Unbranded bulk wax lots. Cheap per ounce, sold in large bags, no maker named, no composition published, no hours figure, nobody to contact.
The value case looks unbeatable until you notice you cannot compute cost per hour for it either, because there are no hours - so "cheap per ounce" is being compared against a different measurement. A weak melt at half the price per ounce that needs twice the dose is not cheaper.
The stronger objection is the pet one. If you cannot see an ingredient list, you cannot check it against the Pet Poison Helpline or VCA lists of oils toxic to cats. For a product you vaporize into a room where an animal lives, that is a poor position to be in for the sake of a few dollars.
Cheap and named is fine. Cheap and anonymous is the one to skip.

The only melt brand here that publishes an hours figure for every pack size AND a dosing rule, which together make cost per hour of fragrance calculable rather than guessable.
Here on a budget page because a large pouch with published hours frequently beats cheap six-cube packs on price per hour. Cheapest per pack and cheapest per hour are not the same product.
- The published numbers are internally consistent across all three sizes at about 30 hours of stated scent time per ounce of wax, which is the sort of consistency you want from a spec sheet.
- The dosing guidance is unusually specific: 1 to 2 shapes in an outlet or mini warmer, 2 to 3 in a standard one, 5 to 8 in the largest. Most brands say one or two cubes and stop.
- Soy melts at a lower temperature than paraffin, which means a gentler, longer throw rather than a hard opening burst. That is a real difference in character, not a marketing line.
Skip this if
You want a supermarket price. Soy melts from a named US maker cost more per ounce than a paraffin blend, and no amount of scent throw closes that gap.

What are the cheapest wax melts?
By price per pack, supermarket brands like Glade. By price per hour of fragrance - the measure that actually matters - a large pouch from a brand that publishes an hours figure often wins, because the per-hour cost falls with pack size. Do the division rather than comparing shelf prices.
Is buying wax melts in bulk cheaper?
Usually yes on paper, with two conditions. You have to like the scent, because a large pouch of something you will not run is not cheap fragrance. And it has to be stored sealed and cool, because fragrance evaporates slowly from solid wax at room temperature over the months it takes to get through a big pack.
How much does it cost to run a wax warmer?

There is no hours figure to compare against, no published composition to check if you have pets, and nobody to contact. Cheap and named is fine; cheap and anonymous is the one to skip.
