The short answer
On published figures, Happy Wax states roughly 60 hours from a 2 oz pouch, 120 from 4 oz and 240 from 8 oz - about 30 hours of scent time per ounce, and consistent across all three sizes. Yankee Candle states up to 8 hours per 0.43 oz cube. Everyone else publishes nothing. And all of it is secondary to four things you control, which are covered below.

What the two brands that publish actually say
Happy Wax is the only maker in this category we found publishing a figure for every pack size, and the numbers are internally consistent, which is a reasonable sign they come from something rather than from marketing.

Two things to take from that table. Happy Wax's 30 hours per ounce holding across three sizes is the kind of consistency you want. And the fact that Yankee and Glade's per-ounce figures differ by nearly a factor of two, with one of them not even coming from the manufacturer, tells you how little these numbers can safely be compared across brands.
Up to is a ceiling, not an average
Yankee's figure is "up to 8 hours". That phrasing does real work and it is worth reading carefully.
"Up to" describes a best case: probably a single cube in a well-matched warmer at a moderate temperature in a small room. It is not a claim that a typical user gets 8 hours. Happy Wax's "about 60 hours" is phrased as an approximation of the typical case, which is a different and more useful kind of statement.
We are not accusing anyone of anything - "up to" is standard in consumer goods. But if you are comparing 8 hours against 30 hours per ounce, you are comparing a ceiling with an average, and that is not a comparison.
The four things you control that matter more
Brand choice is genuinely the smallest of these. In rough order of effect:
1. Warmer temperature
The single biggest variable. A hot plate warmer drives fragrance out fast - strong opening, short life. A gentle bulb warmer runs the pool cooler and the same wax lasts considerably longer. If duration is what you want, a bulb warmer is the hardware answer. See warmer types.
2. How long you run it
Obvious and routinely ignored. Fragrance leaves the pool whenever it is hot, whether or not anyone is in the room. A warmer running eight hours a day exhausts wax roughly twice as fast as one running four, and your nose stopped registering it after the first twenty minutes anyway. 3. Dose
Counter-intuitively, more wax does not last proportionally longer. A deeper pool heats less evenly and you are exposing more fragrance to the air at once. Happy Wax publishes two shapes for eight hours of scent time; doubling that does not give you sixteen.
4. Storage of the unopened packs
Fragrance oil evaporates slowly from solid wax at room temperature - that is what cold throw is. A pack left open in a warm room is losing scent before it ever reaches a warmer. Sealed, cool, dark. See storage and shelf life.
One thing we do not recommend
Judging durability by how long the wax stays melted. It is the most natural thing to do and it is completely wrong.
The wax is not consumed. It will melt and re-solidify indefinitely, looking exactly the same on day ten as on day one, long after every trace of fragrance has left it. People routinely run spent wax for days because there is no visual cue that anything has changed, then conclude the warmer is broken.
The only test is your nose in a room you have been out of for ten minutes, and even that is unreliable because of olfactory adaptation. Practical rule: if you have run a dose for the maker's stated hours, change it, regardless of how it looks. See why you cannot smell your wax melts.
Cost per hour, where it can be computed
Published hours plus price gives you the number that actually decides value, and it is the reason we rank a brand's documentation so highly.
The method: take the price you actually paid, divide by the published hours for that pack. An 8 oz Happy Wax pouch at a published 240 hours needs to cost 2.4 times a 2 oz pouch at 60 hours to be equal value - anything less and the big pouch wins. A six-cube pack with no published hours cannot be entered into that calculation at all.
Electricity is a rounding error next to the wax, incidentally: a 10 W warmer at 17 cents per kilowatt-hour costs about $3.72 a year at six hours a day. Full working on cost per hour of fragrance.
Assumption, not a fact
17 cents per kilowatt-hour is an assumption. A round figure in the range US residential customers actually pay. Your own bill is the number that matters, and every formula on this site is written so you can substitute it.

- The published numbers are internally consistent across all three sizes at about 30 hours of stated scent time per ounce of wax, which is the sort of consistency you want from a spec sheet.
- The dosing guidance is unusually specific: 1 to 2 shapes in an outlet or mini warmer, 2 to 3 in a standard one, 5 to 8 in the largest. Most brands say one or two cubes and stop.
- Soy melts at a lower temperature than paraffin, which means a gentler, longer throw rather than a hard opening burst. That is a real difference in character, not a marketing line.
Skip this if
You want a supermarket price. Soy melts from a named US maker cost more per ounce than a paraffin blend, and no amount of scent throw closes that gap.

The heaviest pack here by some distance, 5.5 oz in six cubes against 2.6 oz in six from Yankee, which changes the price-per-ounce arithmetic completely.
Third despite having by far the most wax per pack, purely because Milkhouse publishes no hours figure. Wax mass is not the same as fragrance duration and we will not treat it as a proxy.
- 0.9 oz a cube against Yankee's 0.43 oz. You are not comparing like with like when you compare six-cube packs across brands, and this pair proves it.
- Soy blended with beeswax rather than straight soy. Beeswax raises the melt point, so it wants a warmer that gets properly hot rather than a gentle bulb.
- Milkhouse does not publish an hours figure. On a pack this size that is a genuine omission, and it is why this is not our longest-lasting pick despite having the most wax.
Skip this if
Your warmer has a small dish. A 5.5 oz six-cube bar is roughly 0.9 oz a cube, and that will overflow a plug-in.

Which wax melts last the longest?
Of the brands that publish a figure, Happy Wax states about 30 hours of scent time per ounce of wax, consistently across its 2 oz, 4 oz and 8 oz pouches. Yankee states up to 8 hours per cube, which is a ceiling rather than an average. Milkhouse and Febreze publish no durability figure at all, so nobody can rank them on it.
How many hours does one wax melt last?
Where makers publish, roughly 8 to 12 hours per standard cube - but the figure depends heavily on your warmer's temperature and how long you run it. A hot plate warmer exhausts wax considerably faster than a gentle bulb warmer, so the same cube can be genuinely done in half the stated time or last well beyond it.
How do I make wax melts last longer?
Use a lower-temperature warmer, run it for fewer hours a day, do not overfill the dish, and keep unopened packs sealed somewhere cool and dark. Those four are all larger effects than which brand you buy. A timer is the cheapest of them, because it stops the warmer heating spent wax while you are asleep or out.
Can you reuse wax melts?
You can re-melt the same wax as often as you like, but once the fragrance has evaporated it will never come back. The wax is a carrier, not the product. Leaving spent wax in the dish also dilutes the next cube you add, so change it out rather than topping it up.
How do I know when a wax melt is finished?
There is no visual cue - spent wax melts and looks identical to fresh wax. The reliable method is time: if you have run a dose for the maker's stated hours, change it. Judging by smell is unreliable because your nose adapts to a constant scent within minutes, so the room can smell fine to a visitor and of nothing to you.
