The strongest wax melts, and the number nobody will print

Fragrance load - the percentage of fragrance oil in the wax - is the number that would settle this page in one line. Not one maker we index publishes it. Several say they use the maximum their wax can hold, which is a sentence, not a figure.

So the ranking runs on what is left, in this order:

1. Dose. How much wax is in one piece, because a bigger piece is more fragrance in the dish. This is the only strength input a buyer controls directly.
2. Published hours. Where a maker states them, they at least commit to something falsifiable.
3. Composition. Wax type changes melt behavior, and a maker that publishes it is a maker taking the question seriously.
4. The wording of the claim. "Loaded to the max recommended level" and "high fragrance load" are marketing. We report them as marketing.

We have not smelled these, nobody publishes independent throw testing, and a scent you dislike will never seem strong. Our methodology sets out what a ranking built on published evidence can and cannot do.

Read the strength language across the aisle and it is remarkably uniform - and remarkably empty.

Four of the five make an unfalsifiable strength claim. Two publish a weight. One publishes hours. If you are choosing on the claims alone you are choosing on copywriting, which is exactly how this category prefers to be shopped.

Hours are not strength - a quiet melt that lasts is not a strong one - but they are the only performance number with any circulation here, and the spread is instructive.

• UCC: up to 20 hours per cube. The longest per-cube claim in this registry, from a pack that publishes no weight to anchor it.
• Shortie's: 5 to 10 hours per half-ounce block, on its premium listing. That is a narrower, more cautious claim from a brand that also publishes the most composition detail here.
• Happy Wax: about 60 hours per 2 oz pouch, published as a table on its own FAQ, based on melting two shapes for eight hours. Worked back, that is roughly 8 hours from about a quarter-ounce of wax.

Line those up and the range for a comparable amount of wax is wide enough to be meaningless. Treat per-cube hour claims as a maker's confidence, not a measurement, and plan on the lower end of anything you are told.

This is the part the product pages will not tell you, because none of it involves buying a different bag of wax.

1. Dose - the one you control

More wax in the dish is more fragrance in the air. A Milkhouse cube is roughly 0.9 oz; a Happy Wax shape is about an eighth of an ounce. Seven of the second equals one of the first, and a dish that holds one comfortably will not hold the other. How many cubes per warmer works the dosing through by dish size.

2. The warmer, not the wax

A hotter dish drives fragrance out faster. The warmers we index run from 10 W to 50 W, and a plate warmer conducts heat straight into the dish while a bulb warmer radiates it from above. If a room is under-scented, changing the warmer usually does more than changing the brand - warmers for large rooms covers which ones push hardest.

3. Placement

Scent moves with air. A warmer in a doorway or near a return vent distributes; a warmer in a corner behind a sofa does not. It is free to fix and it is the most common reason a pack that worked for someone else does nothing for you - where to put a warmer.

There is a fourth reason a room stops smelling of anything, and it is not the wax: you stop noticing it. Why you cannot smell your own wax melts is the honest explanation, and buying a stronger pack does not solve it.

Since nobody publishes a load figure, the only comparison that settles anything is the one you run yourself. It takes two sessions and it is worth doing before you commit to a case of anything.

1. Same room, same warmer, same door position. Air movement changes the result more than the wax does, so hold it constant.
2. Match the dose by weight, not by piece. One Milkhouse cube is about seven Happy Wax shapes. Comparing one cube against one shape tells you about cube size, not about fragrance.
3. Judge at the door, not over the warmer. Everything smells strong from twelve inches away. Walk out, wait a minute, walk back in - that is the test that matches how your house actually experiences it.
4. Judge at 20 minutes and again at three hours. A pack that opens hard and fades is a different product from one that holds, and the packaging will not tell you which you have bought.

Do that once and the marketing language stops mattering, which is the honest endpoint of a page like this one.

Worth saying plainly, because the two words appear together on half the packaging in this category and they describe opposite behavior.

Fragrance leaves wax by evaporating. Drive it out fast - a big dose on a hot plate warmer - and the room smells strong and the wax is spent sooner. Run a small dose on a gentle bulb warmer and the same wax whispers for days. The same cube can be the strongest thing you own or the longest-lasting. It cannot be both in the same session.

Paying a premium for the word "strongest". It is the cheapest word in this category to print and the hardest to support. The packs here that publish the most are not the ones shouting loudest.

Overfilling the dish to compensate. Wax that overflows a warmer is a cleaning job and, on a plate warmer, a hazard. Fill to the dish's working level and change the warmer if you need more - not the dose past what the dish holds.

Melting a cube on a stove because a listing suggested it. One pack here does suggest exactly that if you have no warmer. An unattended dish of wax on a hob is the flame-adjacent risk this whole category exists to remove.

Buying strength for a bedroom. The most common complaint about a strong pack is that it is unbearable in a small room you sleep in. Match the pack to the room with the room size guide before you chase intensity.
