About The Wax Index

The Wax Index is an independent reference for wax melts and warmers. It covers which products to buy, how the hardware differs, how far a melt actually reaches, what a warmer costs to run, and what the safety authorities actually say - particularly about cats.

The name is the strategy. An index is something you consult: comprehensive, ordered, checkable. That is the gap in this category. The search results are full of "15 Best Wax Melts" posts written by sites that also sell wax melts, and the one genuinely independent review authority in this space stopped publishing in 2024.

Right now that is 53 pages covering 15 products, every specification carrying the source and the date we read it.

The flame-free household. Someone who has ruled out an open flame - because of a cat, a toddler, a rental agreement, a dorm rule, a landlord, or something that once got too close to a curtain - and now wants the melt-and-warmer system to actually work.

That person did not arrive browsing for inspiration. They arrived with a specific question: is this safe for my cat, can I leave it on overnight, why can I not smell it any more, what size bulb does this take. Every page here is built to answer the question in the first sixty words and then show the working, rather than making you scroll past four hundred words of preamble to a list.

If you are here because you want a candle, we are the wrong site and we will say so on the comparison pages rather than talking you out of it.

We sell no wax and no warmers. We have accepted no press samples, no free product and no sponsorship. No brand has paid for placement and no brand has seen a page before it went live.

The site is funded entirely by affiliate commission: if you buy something through a link here we earn a percentage, at no extra cost to you. That is the whole business model and it is set out in full on the disclosure page, including which programs we are in and what happens when a product we rate has no buy path.

Commission does not decide the picks. The clearest evidence of that is on the pages themselves: several products are ranked below where they might otherwise sit because their maker publishes no wattage or no hours figure, and one whole product format - the tealight burner - is recommended nowhere on this site despite being cheap, popular and easy to sell.

We have not tested any of these products. No lab, no test units, no premises, nobody here holding a credential of any kind.

Every page ranking above us leads with a testing claim, and we could write one too. We are not going to, because it would be a fabrication, it would be an FTC deception, and it is the single easiest claim in the world for a competitor to falsify.

What we did instead: compiled the published specifications and printed the source and date beside every number, read the manufacturer pages, computed the electrical load and running cost from rated wattage with the assumptions labeled, and checked every safety claim against the NFPA, the Pet Poison Helpline and VCA - cited by name at the point of the claim.

All of it is linked, and every number here can be reproduced from the methodology page without taking our word for anything. Where the evidence is genuinely thin - long-term indoor air quality is the real example - we say that rather than picking whichever answer suits a sale.

Scooter M., an enthusiast. Someone genuinely interested in the category, who reads the manuals, compiles the published specs and does the math. Not an expert, not a specialist, not a veteran of anything - and there is no editorial team behind the byline implying a staff that does not exist.
