What size bulb does a wax warmer take?
Wattage is the number people check and the base is the number that decides whether the bulb fits. Here is how to identify both from the warmer you already own.

The short answer
There is no single answer, because warmer bulbs are not standardized across the category. What you need is the base type (the fitting that screws or pushes in) and the maximum wattage the warmer is rated for. Both are usually printed on the warmer itself, on a label under the base. Match the base first - a bulb with the right wattage and the wrong base will not fit, and one with the right base and too high a wattage should not be used.
Base first, wattage second
This is the error that sends people back to the shop. "25 W wax warmer bulb" is not a specification - it is half of one. Wattage tells you how much power the bulb will draw; the base tells you whether it physically fits and makes contact.
Buying a 25 W bulb with the wrong base is the single most common reason a working warmer looks broken. So is buying a bulb of the right base and a higher wattage than the warmer is rated for, which is a genuinely bad idea rather than merely a wasted trip - the housing and the wiring were designed for a specific maximum.
How to identify what you need
- Unplug the warmer and let it cool completely. Warmer bulbs run hot and the housing holds heat after the bulb goes off.
- Look for a label on the base or underside. Most warmers carry a printed rating - voltage, frequency and maximum wattage. The Candle Warmers Etc. models we index print theirs as 120 V, 60 Hz and a wattage.
- Take the old bulb out and look at the base. A screw base with a narrow thread is candelabra-style; a two-pin push-and-twist base is a GU-type. If there is any printing on the bulb itself, that is your answer.
- Check the maker's own designation. Candle Warmers Etc. names its bulbs by code - NP1 in the Milk Glass lamp, NP3 in the Vintage Bulb Illumination warmer. If your warmer is from a brand that does this, buy by the code.
- If nothing is printed anywhere, photograph the base and measure it. Base diameter is the deciding dimension, and a bulb listing will state it.

What a replacement bulb costs to own
Bulbs are cheap individually and are almost always sold in multipacks, which changes how you should think about it: the cost is not the bulb, it is that a warmer you cannot source a bulb for becomes an ornament.

Can you use an LED?
Generally no, and it is worth understanding why rather than just being told.
In a bulb-heated warmer the bulb is not the light source with heat as a side effect - the heat is the function. An incandescent or halogen bulb converts most of its power to heat, which is exactly what melts the wax. An LED of the same nominal wattage produces a fraction of that heat, because being efficient at making light instead of heat is the entire point of an LED.
Fit an LED to a bulb warmer and you will typically get a well-lit warmer that never melts anything. If low running cost is what attracted you to the idea, the honest answer is a low-wattage plate warmer rather than an LED in a bulb warmer.
Questions people actually ask
What size bulb goes in a plug-in wax warmer?
Commonly 15 W or 25 W, but the base type matters as much as the wattage and it varies between makers. The VP Home plug-in we index publishes 25 W at 120 V. Look for a printed rating on the warmer body and identify the base from the old bulb before ordering, because a bulb with the right wattage and wrong base will not fit.
Can I put a higher wattage bulb in my wax warmer?
No. The maximum wattage printed on the warmer is what the housing and wiring were designed for, and exceeding it is a real hazard rather than a technicality. If the throw is not strong enough, add more wax or move to a higher-rated warmer rather than over-lamping the one you have.
Can you use an LED bulb in a wax warmer?
In a bulb-heated warmer, no. The heat from the bulb is what melts the wax, and an LED is efficient precisely because it produces very little heat for the power it draws. You will get a warmer that lights up and never melts anything. If low running cost is the goal, buy a low-wattage electric dish warmer instead.
What is an NP1 or NP3 bulb?
Those are Candle Warmers Etc. designations for the bulbs used in specific models of theirs - NP1 in the Milk Glass Candle Warmer Lamp, NP3 in the Vintage Bulb Illumination warmer. If your warmer is from a maker that publishes a bulb code, buying by the code is more reliable than matching wattage.
My warmer has no bulb. What do I replace?
Nothing. Electric dish and plate warmers heat the dish with an element underneath and have no bulb at all. That is one of the main reasons to choose that type, and it is worth knowing before you go looking for a replacement that does not exist.
