The short answer
Happy Wax is the best-documented brand in this category by a clear margin: wax composition, pack weights, counts, hours for every size and a dosing rule, all on its own site. Milkhouse Candle Company is second on composition and pack size. Yankee Candle wins on range and availability rather than on documentation. Two of the biggest names here - both owned by very large companies - publish almost nothing.

What we are ranking is documentation, because it is the only thing about a brand that is checkable from outside and because it turns out to predict the things buyers care about. A brand that publishes hours and a dose is a brand you can compare on value. A brand that publishes nothing is one you buy on price and hope.

The two big names that publish least
Febreze is Procter and Gamble. Glade is SC Johnson. Between them they are two of the largest household-products companies in the world, with technical documentation teams, safety data sheets and regulatory affairs departments.
Neither publishes a wax composition for its melts. Neither publishes an hours figure on its own product pages. Glade's widely quoted "12 hours per melt" appears on retail listings; we could not find it on Glade's own site, so we record it as a retail-listing figure.
We are not suggesting anything is being hidden. The likeliest explanation is that these are supermarket impulse products where nobody in the chain expects the question to be asked. But the consequence for a buyer trying to compare value is the same either way: you cannot.
The brand you cannot buy the normal way
Scentsy. It is the largest single brand in this category by search volume - larger than any other brand term we measured - and it is not reliably available on Amazon, because it sells direct and through independent consultants.
We have no buy path for it. Rather than write a comparison whose buy button cannot exist, or link you somewhere we have not verified, we have left it off the list and said why. If you are specifically looking for Scentsy, buy it from Scentsy - we have nothing to add to that transaction and we would be earning nothing from it either way.
What we would say is that Scentsy warmers take standard wax, so if you own one you are not locked into the brand for refills. Any melt in this list will work in it.
Small makers, and the honest trade-off
There is a large independent wax-melt scene - single-person operations, small batch, often genuinely better fragrance loads than the supermarket brands because the whole proposition is a stronger product.
The trade-off is documentation and continuity. A small maker rarely publishes an hours figure, may reformulate between batches, and can be gone in a year. That is fine for a product you are buying because you like it. It is a poor basis for the kind of comparison this site does, which is why our list is the brands with published specifications rather than the brands with the best reputation on a forum.
If you have found a small maker you like, keep buying it. This page is for the situation where you have not.
One brand behavior we do not recommend buying into
Proprietary warmer-and-refill systems. Some brands sell a warmer sized so that only their own refills fit it neatly, in the razor-and-blades pattern.
Wax melts are a genuinely open format. A standard cube fits a standard dish, and any melt in our list will work in almost any warmer. Buying into a system trades that away for no functional benefit, and it means a discontinued line leaves you with hardware and no refills.

The only melt brand here that publishes an hours figure for every pack size AND a dosing rule, which together make cost per hour of fragrance calculable rather than guessable.
- The published numbers are internally consistent across all three sizes at about 30 hours of stated scent time per ounce of wax, which is the sort of consistency you want from a spec sheet.
- The dosing guidance is unusually specific: 1 to 2 shapes in an outlet or mini warmer, 2 to 3 in a standard one, 5 to 8 in the largest. Most brands say one or two cubes and stop.
- Soy melts at a lower temperature than paraffin, which means a gentler, longer throw rather than a hard opening burst. That is a real difference in character, not a marketing line.
Skip this if
You want a supermarket price. Soy melts from a named US maker cost more per ounce than a paraffin blend, and no amount of scent throw closes that gap.

The heaviest pack here by some distance, 5.5 oz in six cubes against 2.6 oz in six from Yankee, which changes the price-per-ounce arithmetic completely.
Second because it publishes a real wax composition on its own site and puts the most wax in a pack, and it is held off the top by publishing no hours figure for a product that size.
- 0.9 oz a cube against Yankee's 0.43 oz. You are not comparing like with like when you compare six-cube packs across brands, and this pair proves it.
- Soy blended with beeswax rather than straight soy. Beeswax raises the melt point, so it wants a warmer that gets properly hot rather than a gentle bulb.
- Milkhouse does not publish an hours figure. On a pack this size that is a genuine omission, and it is why this is not our longest-lasting pick despite having the most wax.

Your warmer has a small dish. A 5.5 oz six-cube bar is roughly 0.9 oz a cube, and that will overflow a plug-in.

The only melt on this list built around neutralizing an odor rather than covering it, which is a different product doing a different job.
- Odor elimination and fragrance are not the same claim. Febreze markets these on the first; every other melt here is sold on the second.
- No published hours. That is a real gap for a product people buy repeatedly, and it means cost per hour cannot be computed for this one.
- If the odor source is a litter tray or a damp dog bed, the melt is the last step and not the first. Nothing warmed in a dish removes a source you have not dealt with.

You want to know how long a cube lasts. Procter and Gamble does not publish an hours figure for these, and wanting one does not produce it.

What is the best wax melt brand?
On documentation, Happy Wax - it is the only brand we index that publishes wax composition, pack weights and counts, an hours figure for every size and a dosing rule, all on its own site. On range and availability, Yankee Candle. We do not rank brands on fragrance quality because there is no honest way to do it.
Are Scentsy wax melts worth it?
We cannot tell you, and we would rather say so than pretend. Scentsy sells direct and through consultants rather than through the retailers we can link, so we have no verified buy path and no basis for a comparison. What is worth knowing is that Scentsy warmers take standard wax, so owning one does not lock you into the brand for refills.
Are cheap wax melts as good as expensive ones?
You can check rather than guess, but only for brands that publish hours. Divide price by published hours and compare. Where no hours figure exists - which is most of the cheap end - you are comparing price per ounce, which tells you about quantity and nothing about fragrance load. That is the real cost of buying from a brand that publishes nothing.
Can I use any brand of wax melt in any warmer?
Almost always, yes. Wax melts are an open format: standard cubes fit standard dishes and there is no compatibility layer. The only real constraint is physical size - a 0.9 oz cube will overflow a small plug-in dish that takes a 0.38 oz one twice over. Match the cube to the dish rather than the brand to the warmer.
