Yankee Candle wax melts review

We read three current Yankee melt listings side by side. The striking thing is not that disclosure is thin - it is that it is inconsistent between listings for the same product line.

The six-count listing gives you everything you need: 2.6 oz across six cubes is about 0.43 oz a cube, and up to 8 hours per cube is a claim you can plan around. The multi-packs - the ones most people buy, because they are better value per cube - drop both figures.

That is a strange way to run a range. It also means the honest answer to "how much wax am I getting?" on an 18-cube pack is: probably three times the 6-count, but Yankee has not said so.

This is the most-asked question about these and it has a published answer, which is rarer than it should be: up to 8 hours per cube, stated on Yankee's own six-count listing.

Two things to do with that number.

• Read "up to" as the ceiling. It is a best case from the maker, not a measurement, and a hotter warmer will spend a cube faster than a gentle bulb warmer will.
• Compare it per ounce, not per cube. Eight hours from 0.43 oz is not obviously better or worse than Happy Wax's published 60 hours from a 2 oz pouch - which works out at roughly the same order of magnitude. Cube sizes differ enormously across brands, so per-cube claims are not comparable on their own.

Strip away the spec sheet and the reason Yankee dominates this category is straightforward: you already know what the scents smell like. Balsam & Cedar, Home Sweet Home, Clean Cotton, Midsummer's Night - these are reference fragrances that people have encountered in other people's houses for thirty years.

That is worth real money and no amount of disclosure from a small brand replaces it. If you already own a Yankee jar candle you like, the melt is the flame-free way to have the same fragrance - warming a candle vs burning it covers the other way to do that with the jar you own.

The Balsam & Cedar pack is the clearest case: blended from balsam, cedar wood and juniper berry, it is the evergreen scent most people mean at Christmas, which is why it also appears in our Christmas roundup.

A lot of the searching around this brand uses the word tarts, which is worth clearing up because it sends people to the wrong products.

Tart is the older word for a wax melt - a wickless piece of scented wax that you warm rather than burn. Yankee's current listings call them wax melts and scent cubes; older packaging and a great deal of the internet still says tarts. They are the same category, and a Yankee tart and a Yankee wax melt are the same product.

Two related terms that are not the same thing: tea lights are wicked candles, and a tart burner is usually a tealight-heated dish rather than an electric warmer - which matters, because the whole flame-free argument disappears with it. On documentation, comprehensively. Set the same four questions against Yankee and the two brands we rank highest for disclosure:

• What is the wax? Yankee: not published on any melt listing we read. Shortie's: 100% soy with three exclusions. Milkhouse: soy blended with beeswax.
• What does the pack weigh? Yankee: only on the small listing. Milkhouse: 5.5 oz across six cubes on every listing.
• How long does it last? Yankee: up to 8 hours a cube. Happy Wax: an hours table for every pouch size on its own FAQ.
• Where was it made? Yankee: not stated. Both comparators: stated.

None of that makes Yankee melts bad. It makes them a fragrance purchase rather than a specification purchase, and it is why they are not the top pick on our main ranking despite being the most recognizable product in the category.

Buying 18 cubes of a scent you have never smelled. Both multi-packs here are single-fragrance. If you are exploring rather than restocking, the six-count is the sane unit.

Melting them down to make candles. The Home Sweet Home listing markets itself for DIY candle making. Fragrance formulated for a warmer behaves differently in a wicked candle, and nothing about the pack tells you the flash point - this is a genuinely bad idea presented as a feature.

Assuming the 8-hour figure applies to every pack. It is published on one listing, for one cube size. The multi-packs say nothing at all.

Paying multi-pack prices for a scent you use occasionally. Wax does not spoil quickly, but fragrance does fade in storage - storage and shelf life covers how long an unopened pack really keeps.
