Hot throw vs cold throw
The pack smells incredible and the room smells of nothing. That is not a defect, and there is a specific reason for it worth understanding before you buy again.

The short answer
Cold throw is the scent from unmelted wax; hot throw is the scent released once it is melted. They differ because fragrance is a mixture of components with different evaporation points. At room temperature you mostly smell the lightest ones - the top notes. Heat the wax and the heavier base notes come out too, changing the character as well as the intensity. A strong cold throw does not predict a strong hot one.
Why one does not predict the other
A fragrance is not one substance. It is a blend of many compounds, and they do not all evaporate at the same rate.
Light, volatile compounds - citrus, green notes, sharp florals - evaporate readily at room temperature. Those are what reaches you from a sealed pack. Heavier compounds - woods, resins, musks, vanillas - barely move until the wax is warm.
So cold throw is a sample of the top of the fragrance, and hot throw is closer to the whole thing. A blend loaded with bright top notes smells spectacular in the pack and can be thin once warmed. A woody or resinous blend can smell of almost nothing cold and fill a room hot.
Which means the shop test - lifting a pack to your nose - is systematically biased toward one kind of fragrance. It is not useless, but it is not the product either.

Cold throw has one genuinely useful application: a cube left in a drawer, a wardrobe, a car or a gym bag is a passive air freshener with no power and no heat. It is faint, and in a confined space faint is enough. It is also the only legitimate way to use a melt without a warmer.
Cold throw is also the pack slowly emptying
Worth stating plainly because it reframes storage entirely.
If you can smell an unopened pack, fragrance is leaving it. That is the same evaporation a warmer accelerates, just running very slowly at room temperature. A pack with a wonderful cold throw sitting open on a warm shelf is losing itself continuously.

How to judge a melt properly
- Do not buy a large pack on cold throw alone. It over-represents bright top notes and tells you least about the blends that perform best warm.
- Test with one cube, then leave the room. Twenty minutes, then step out for ten and come back in. Stepping out is not optional - your nose adapts to a constant smell within minutes.
- Judge at the distance you will actually sit. Standing over a warmer tells you nothing about whether it reaches the sofa.
- Give it a full session before deciding. Hot throw builds. The first ten minutes is the pool coming up to temperature, not the product.
What the warmer does to the balance
Pool temperature shifts which notes dominate, which is why the same melt can smell different on two warmers.
A hot plate warmer drives the whole blend out quickly, including the heavier base notes - fuller, stronger, and faster to exhaust. A gentle bulb warmer runs cooler, so the lighter components lead for longer and the heavy end is under-represented. That is closer to an extended cold throw than to a full hot throw.
Practical consequence: if a melt you liked in the shop is disappointing at home on a bulb warmer, the wax may not be the problem. Try it on something hotter before writing the brand off. Mechanism on how wax warmers work.
Questions people actually ask
Why does my wax melt smell strong in the pack but not in the warmer?
Because the pack smell is mostly top notes - light, volatile compounds that evaporate readily at room temperature. Blends heavy in those smell spectacular cold and can be thin once warmed. It can also be your warmer running too cool, or your own nose adapting. Leave the room for ten minutes and come back before concluding the wax is weak.
What is cold throw?
Cold throw is the fragrance you get from unmelted wax at room temperature - what you smell lifting a sealed pack to your nose. It is real but partial: you are mostly getting the lightest components of the blend, not the whole thing.
Can you use wax melts for cold throw only?
Yes, in a small enclosed space. A cube in a drawer, a wardrobe, a car or a gym bag gives a faint continuous release with no power and no heat, and in a confined space faint is enough. It will not scent a room - cold throw is a fraction of the output a warmer produces.
Does a strong cold throw mean a strong hot throw?
