Three ways to melt the same cube. They differ on cost, throw, what you have to replace and where they can physically go.

The short answer

Buy a dish warmer if you want the lowest running cost and nothing to replace. Buy a candle warmer lamp if you want a published timer, or you already own jar candles you would rather not burn. Buy a plug-in only if you have no surface to give up - it is the most constrained of the three on dish size and it is not cheaper to run.

When the plug-in wins

When there is no surface. That is the whole case, and it is a good one: a bathroom with a single narrow shelf, a landing with nothing but a socket, a small entryway. In those rooms a plug-in is the only one of the three that physically works, and a night light is a genuine bonus on a landing.

What it does not win on is cost. At 25 W it draws more than any plate warmer we index, and more than double the 10 W one. If you were choosing a plug-in because it seemed like the small, cheap option, that intuition is wrong - it is the small option, not the cheap one.

It also loses on capacity. The smallest dish of the three means one cube and more frequent changes, which is why Happy Wax publishes separate dosing for outlet warmers.

When the lamp wins

Two cases. First, when you want a timer: this is the only one of the three formats where a published auto shut-off is normal rather than rare, and if the warmer is going beside a bed that is worth more than any efficiency argument.

Second, when you already own jar candles. A lamp warms a jar from above without lighting it, which means you get the candle's fragrance with no flame and no wax consumed - the jar lasts far longer than it would burned. If you have shelves of candles you stopped burning when the cat arrived, a lamp is the machine for that exact problem.

When the dish warmer wins

Most of the time, honestly, if you are buying for wax melts specifically rather than for jar candles.

It has no consumable, so it cannot be orphaned by a discontinued bulb. It has the lowest published wattages in the category - the 10 W model we index costs about a third of a 25 W plug-in to run. It heats by conduction, so it comes up to temperature fastest and throws hardest for its power. And the removable silicone dishes on the better models make wax changes a ten-second job rather than a chore.

What it does not give you is light or a timer. If you want either, add an outlet timer for a few dollars and a lamp elsewhere in the room.

Cost per hour of fragrance, all three

Electricity is the small half of the cost of running any of these. The wax is the big half, and it is the same wax whichever type you choose - which is worth remembering when a $6 difference in warmer price is deciding your purchase.

Questions people actually ask

Which type of wax warmer gives the strongest scent throw?

For a given wattage, an electric dish warmer, because it heats the wax by conduction from directly underneath rather than radiating heat down from a bulb. It reaches working temperature faster and holds it more evenly. Dish size matters as much as heating type though - a plug-in holds one cube where a dish warmer holds two, and that difference is larger than the heating difference.

Are plug-in warmers cheaper to run than a lamp or dish warmer?

No. The plug-in we index is rated at 25 W, which is more than any plate warmer we found and more than double the 10 W model. Plug-ins are the small option rather than the cheap one. The cheapest thing to run in this category is a low-wattage electric dish warmer with no bulb.

Can I use wax melts in a candle warmer lamp instead of a candle?

Yes, in a suitable shallow dish or tin placed under the head rather than loose on the base. The thing to check is head height: a lamp heats from above and the wax has to be close enough to reach a proper melt pool. Where a maker publishes a head-height range, use it.

Which warmer type is easiest to clean?

An electric dish warmer with a removable silicone dish. Cooled wax releases from silicone in one piece with no heating and no wiping. A fixed ceramic well, which is what most plug-ins have, means warming the wax slightly and wiping it out with a paper towel each time. Over a year of scent changes that difference adds up.
