A candle warmer lamp does one thing a plate warmer does not: it sits beside where you sit, often beside where you sleep, and it stays on. The single most-searched anxiety in this whole category is some version of can I leave this on overnight. A published timer answers it in hardware instead of asking you to remember.
So that is what this list ranks on. Not brightness, not finish, not how the listing photographs. What the maker will commit to in writing about when the lamp turns itself off.

An auto shut-off and a cycle timer are not the same thing
These get used interchangeably in listings and they solve different problems.
An auto shut-off is one-shot. You set four hours, four hours pass, it turns off and stays off. That is what you want on a nightstand: it removes the consequence of falling asleep.
A cycle timer repeats. Set it for the two hours before you normally get home and it does that every day without being asked. That is a scheduling feature, and it is genuinely useful in a hallway or an entry - but it also means the lamp switches itself on in a room you are not in, which is the opposite of what a nervous buyer wants beside a bed.
Pick on which of those two you actually need. The Marycele is the first; the GODONLIF is the second.
The measurement people get wrong
Head height, and specifically the minimum.
A candle warmer lamp works by radiating heat down onto a surface a few inches below. Too far away and the wax never reaches a proper melt pool - the lamp is on, the room looks right, and nothing much is happening. Too close on a tall jar and you cannot fit the jar under it at all.
Candle Warmers Etc. is the only maker in this set that publishes an explicit jar limit, and it does it properly, in two dimensions: 22 oz or smaller and up to 6 inches tall. Height is the one people miss. A tall, narrow 22 oz jar can be inside the weight limit and still not fit.
Measure the tallest candle you own before you buy. If a listing does not publish a range, that is a real gap and it is reflected in where those lamps sit on this list.
One we do not recommend
Any lamp sold without a published timer at all. They exist in volume, they are usually the cheapest listings on the page, and they are a bad buy for this specific format.
The reason is that the lamp's natural home is a bedside table or a sofa-side shelf - the two places you are most likely to fall asleep next to it. A plate warmer with no timer in a kitchen is a minor inconvenience. A lamp with no timer beside a bed is the exact scenario the NFPA warns about with candles, minus the flame but plus the thing you will lie awake wondering about.
The Briever is at the bottom of our list rather than off it because it does publish a timer, just not its durations. A listing with no timer mentioned at all is a different proposition.
Lamps against the other warmer types
A lamp is not automatically the right answer. It is the right answer when you want light and heat from one object, when you already own jar candles you would rather not burn, or when the timer matters.
It is the wrong answer when you want the lowest running cost - a bulb is a light source you are paying for whether or not you want the light, and the cheapest thing we index to run is a 10 W plate warmer with no bulb at all. It is also the wrong answer when you have no surface, where a plug-in wins on the only criterion that matters.

Do candle warmer lamps really work?
Yes, with the caveat that head height decides it. The lamp radiates heat down onto the candle or dish below, so the wax has to be close enough to reach a proper melt pool. Set the head too high and the lamp will be on with very little happening. Where a maker publishes a head-height range, use it; where one does not, that is a gap worth weighing.
Can you leave a candle warmer lamp on overnight?
Only choose to if the model publishes an auto shut-off timer, and even then the sensible answer is to use the shortest duration that covers the evening. There is no fragrance benefit to running one all night: wax stops throwing much scent long before it stops being melted, so an unattended lamp is heating spent wax.
What size candle fits a candle warmer lamp?
It depends on the lamp and most makers do not say. Candle Warmers Etc. is the exception in this set and publishes a limit in both dimensions: jars 22 oz or smaller and up to 6 inches tall. Height is the constraint people miss, because a tall narrow jar can be within the weight limit and still not fit under the head.
Is a candle warmer lamp cheaper to run than burning the candle?
